João de Sousa, 39, garimpeiro da comunidade da Ressaca que será afetada pelo início das operações da mineradora canadense Belo Sun, conta como tudo começou: “Em 2002, o pessoal da Belo Sun veio aqui a primeira vez. Eles disseram que vinham fazer uma pesquisa, ver o que a comunidade precisava. Disseram que iam trazer emprego pra gente. Nós fizemos esses papéis mas nunca veio nada para nós. Era tudo mentira. Só depois que a Norte Energia começou a construir Belo Monte é que eles vieram falar que a gente ia ter que sair daqui da nossa área. Agora eles dizem que vão negociar indenização e que a gente vai ter que sair a partir do fim desse ano. Mas não sabemos pra onde e nem quanto vai ser essa indenização.”
Na última reunião que ocorreu na comunidade, os representantes de Belo Sun teriam dito que os garimpeiros, que trabalham na região em sistema de cooperativa há décadas, anos não terão indenização nenhuma, porque operam ilegalmente. “Agora, 60 anos depois, eles vem dizer que o nosso garimpo é ilegal?”, questiona João, “O garimpeiro vai ter que sair, mas não vai receber nada. Para onde ele vai? E vai viver do que? Se nós fôssemos fazer isso com eles lá [no Canadá], será que eles iam achar bom?”
“E nós sabemos que não é só ouro que tem aqui. Sabemos que tem prata, cassiterita e diamante. Mas isso eles não falam. E não falam que a química desse tipo de planta de mineração é pesada e que tudo que cai aqui na água do Xingu desce lá pro rio Amazonas.”
Sobre os impactos de Belo Monte na Volta Grande do Xingu, João diz: “Hoje você anda no rio e não vê mais peixe como antes, nem encontra caça na mata e a água tá suja. E o rio secou muito esse ano, tá tendo muito impacto”.

Impacts over the Arara indigenous people were not considered in the studies used for the environmental license that allowed the begining of Belo Sun operations in the Xingu river.
