Salvador, 2010-11

Brazil’s 2011 national violence survey reveals that the murder rate in Salvador is now four times that of São Paulo, and double that of Rio de Janeiro. In a decade, Salvador rocketed 21 places up the list of most violent state capitals in the nation. It registered 1,846 homicides in 2010. The Brazilian confederation of municipalities reported in May that by 2008 Salvador had become the national leader in firearm homicides. The study described the situation as “chaotic” and a “context of war.”
