On the eve of her 102nd birthday, Dona Canô has lived nearly all her life in Santo Amaro da Purificacao, where she mothered eight children, Eunice, Clara Maria, Maria Isabel, Rodrigo Antonio, Roberto Jose, Caetano, Maria Bethânia and Irene. The teacher and writer Maria Isabel, known as Mabel, has turned her mom’s famed traditional Bahia food recipes into the book ‘O Sal e um Dom’ (‘Salt is a Gift’, In Portuguese), released in 2008, and Maria Bethânia is herself an acclaimed singer in Brazil.
